Remember, that a dog collar with prongs is a training device and not designed for a long-term use. It is not your dog's common daily collar. Never leave your dog in a prong collar alone.

Make sure you wear it on your dog in the right way and place. A prong collar should be put on the top neck area, right behind the ears and under the jaw.

Make short and firm pulls when you need to stop your dog doing something wrong. Then, release the pressure. This action is usually enough to stop wrong dog's behavior and you will not need to repeat it. The result is quick and visible.

No matter how you use this tool, a prong dog collar is NOT to be used for:

• very aggressive dogs
• extremely shy or fearful dogs
• young puppies.

Prong collars are designed for larger, untrained dogs to train calm walking and obedience to commands. They are used as a last resort for dogs with behavior problems like pulling and other issues that cannot be trained by other means. Puppies are new to training and walking and should not start off with the most intense level of training like prong collars. Dog training collars with prongs are not safe until at least 5 or 6 months of age and, even then, they are not recommended unless other training methods have been tried without success.

Any collar will not fix a dog’s bad behavior permanently. Permanent results are gained through regular, patient training. A prong collar will give you a bit of “power steering” with a larger dog that pulls hard, but it’s not a substitute for training.

A prong collar is placed on a dog's neck in a definite area to be safe and helpful for training and behavior correction. Put a prong collar right behind the ears and under the jaw. This way of placing the collar assures safe and efficient action.The collar should fit snugly as it doesn't move around from the proper place. If the collar is loose, consider removing one of the prongs.

Please, put a measuring tape tightly to a dog's neck along its circumference right behind the ears and under the jaw. Keep the space of about two fingers between the neck and the collar size for the right fit. Or just add two inches to a dog's neck size for the right prong collar size.

NEVER EVER take a dog prong collar slipping through its head unfastened! The right way to put a prong collar on is to release two links or a buckle if there is and take it exactly on the area it is supposed to be worn (behind the ears and under the jaw, on the upper neck area!).

Check if the links with prongs are not twisted. Place the O-ring is to the back of the neck and the center plate is exactly in the front to assure a balanced fit.

The part of a prong collar that is attached to a leash should be placed on the back of a dog's neck, just behind a dog's ears.

A leash may be attached to a prong collar in two ways: to the live-ring or the dead-ring. Which one to choose depends on the training purpose.

The first time a prong is used on a dog the snap should always be on the dead-ring.

When a correction is given and the leash is connected to the live-ring, the dog gets an amplified correction.The live-ring is used if a dog does not respond well to the snap being placed on the dead-ring.

Please, choose a dog prong collar taking into account the following tips:

• the neck size of your dog
• dog’s weight
• dog’s fur color
• the level of correction your dog requires
• dog reaction to nickel.

Both choke and pinch collars are generally made of a metal chain and acts through the tightening around a dog’s neck when a handler pulls or jerks on the leash.

A choke chain dog collar type is designed to control your dog or correct its behavior by tightening around its neck. Usually there is no way to control how much a choke chain can tighten (unless there is a limiting martingale loop), so some risk or choking your dog is possible in this case. It may also cause injuries to a dog's trachea, esophagus, the blood vessels around the eyes, neck sprains, casue a nerve damage, fainting, and temporary paralysis.

Prong collars contain metal spikes on the inner side that ‘pinch’ a dog’s neck if he pulls on the leash or if a handler jerks to stop dog's wrogn action or teaches some command. Prong collars have a martingale chain loop that controls how tightly the collar chokes, which reduces the chance for accidental injuries. If a prong collar size is chosen correctly and worn at the right place that is described above, it will not harm your dog.

Metal dog collars are made of various alloys. In the majority of cases when they leave marks on dog's fur is the nickel containant. However, there is no 100% guarantee that any metal collar will not stain your dog’s fur.

A stainless steel collar has the highest rust resistance level. It is fully rustproof, not only on the surface. Thus, it will not rust even if the surface is damaged or scratched and will serve you the longest among all metal dog collars.

A Neck Tech collar is intended for those dogs who need a slight correction and it is safe for a long hair (while long prongs may get tangled in it). But it works well on short haired dogs as well. In addition, it looks less barbaric than a prong collar, since the prongs stay invisible inside.
